A comprehensive rescue and recovery effort is actively in progress in the Caribbean waters for a duo of unlocated sailing vessels carrying humanitarian supplies journeying from Mexico to the island of Cuba.

Military Search Missions Deployed

The Mexican government has deployed navy personnel and reconnaissance aircraft to find the two vessels, which were had on board a minimum of nine crew members, as stated by a navy statement.

The boats had been projected to arrive in Cuba's capital on either Tuesday or Wednesday, but there has been radio silence from them and zero verification of their arrival, authorities reported.

The Situation of Humanitarian Support to the Nation

The island nation has relied heavily on humanitarian shipments from Mexico over the last several weeks, as the island struggles through widespread power outages across the country.

"Both crews and captains are experienced sailors, and each boat are equipped with suitable safety systems and emergency beacons," an official involved in the effort said.

The nine crew members are from France, Poland, the United States, and Cuba. Officials said it has been in touch with coast guard agencies from the involved countries along with their diplomatic representatives.

"We are co-operating fully with the officials and remain confident in the capability of the sailors to reach Havana safely," the official further stated.

Previous Aid Shipment

Just days before, the government in Havana widely celebrated and officially received a different ship that had delivered 14 tonnes of donated goods to the island.

That ship, nicknamed "a new Granma" in reference to the vessel in which Castro landed in Cuba to start the revolution in the 1950s, brought photovoltaic panels, pharmaceuticals, formula milk, bikes and provisions.

Larger Geopolitical Context

Charity groups and individuals have been at the forefront of efforts to ship essential supplies to Cuba starting at the turn of the year, when a fuel embargo on the country came into effect.

Global bodies have since raised alarms about ""critical" lack of essential goods, with more than 50k operations cancelled in Cuba because of energy rationing.

Foreign policy measures have intensified over the past months, with statements from several officials underscoring the complex state of diplomatic ties.

Responding to certain proposals, a senior official from Cuba stated firmly that "the governance model of Cuba is not up for negotiation."

Accounts suggest that preliminary steps of discussions were initiated, although their current progress remains unclear.

The Mexican navy stated it was pledged to using every available asset at its command to discover the vessels and guarantee the safety of the crews.

As of now, there has been silence on the disappeared vessels by the Cuban government.
