A senior Russian general has been declared dead following an detonation in Moscow, according to reports from authorities.

The event happened on Monday morning when an explosive device placed beneath a vehicle detonated, resulting in the death of Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov.

Sarvarov was the head of the armed forces' department for training operations.

Investigators stated that one line of inquiry suggests the potential involvement of Ukrainian intelligence services. At this time, Ukraine has offered no public response.

Location of the Incident

Officials have been dispatched to the scene, which is reportedly in a south district of the city.

Reports state the detonation occurred in a vehicle lot close to a residential building.

History of Targeted Attacks

Since the onset of the full-scale conflict in Ukraine, a number of Russian military officials have been attacked within Moscow.

This new event follows other serious incidents, such as:

  • General Yaroslav Moskalik was killed in a car bomb attack in Moscow earlier this year.
  • General Igor Kirillov died in late 2024 when a explosive hidden on a scooter was set off from a distance.

While a source from Ukraine in the past connected Kirillov's death to Ukraine's security service, such claims are never publicly admitted as a matter of official stance.

The war has increasingly seen shadowy operations reaching into the heart of the Russian capital.

The probe into General Sarvarov's death continues to be active.
