Adult Swim's Premier New Show of 2025 Secures a Major Extension for an Additional Two Seasons.
In October of last year, Adult Swim welcomed back its offbeat hit, Smiling Friends. However, not long after, the network unveiled a completely new animated series with a markedly softer tone. Haha, You Clowns was heartwarming and calm, in the spirit of a cartoon version of a contemplative talk show. In an era often defined by cynicism, this show's sincerity struck a chord and turned it into a surprise hit.
A Major Commitment
In mid-December, the network revealed exciting news: Haha, You Clowns has been picked up for two more seasons. This gives showrunner Joe Cappa significant creative freedom to further explore the story of the Campbell family. The series centers on three polite teenage brothers whose defining trait is their deep love for their widowed father, with Cappa voicing for all four key characters.
"My deepest thanks go to the fans of the show who gave *Haha, You Clowns* a chance and shared it with others," said Cappa. "I’m incredibly thrilled that I get to spend more time in the Campbell household for a little longer."
Network Praise
Accompanying the news laudits from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "radically heartfelt and oddly captivating." He shouted out the fans who found the show and championed its uniquely offbeat sensibility.
"All of you showed up for this new show, rooted for it on social media, and grew it week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," said Ouweleen. "In the words: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Different Kind of Comedy
Upon its debut, Haha, You Clowns was described as "a gentle counterpart" to other adult animated fare. There’s something surprisingly comfy about following this lovable family go about their simple existence.
In earlier interviews, creator Joe Cappa shared his goal to move the comedy genre beyond its current sarcastic tone. He traced this trend to the rise of certain blockbuster franchises.
“There's this level of irony that we can't get ourselves out of,” noted Cappa. “The attitude is that we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for 10 years, and we just have to laugh at something different now. Comedy has to evolve.”
Future Seasons
Now, with Haha, You Clowns set to continue, Cappa could potentially be part of that very evolution. If nothing else, the renewal guarantees audiences additional episodes to experience the heartfelt moments of the endearing Campbell clan.
The first season's conclusion of Haha, You Clowns is scheduled to air on December 21st. The complete first season is currently streaming on HBO Max.
