Based on information from Israel, at least 98 Palestinian individuals have died while detained beginning in October 2023. A rights monitoring body operating from Israel has indicated that the true figure is probably considerably greater, as a result of hundreds of missing individuals originating in Gaza.

Confidential official information shows that the vast majority of incarcerated Palestinians from Gaza who perished in jail were ordinary citizens, based on a related examination.

Further inmates who lost their lives in detention in Israel are unidentified. The prison service and military gave researchers with the number of casualties in custody, and minimal further data including the facility where they died, but excluding the detainees’ identities.

Identification Challenges

Regarding 21 occurrences, mainly people from Gaza, investigators were unable to match the few details provided by authorities to a fatality registered by advocacy bodies, by means of statements from former inmates or accounts in the press.
