Ceramic Gift, Anyone? Meloni to Auction Off International Gifts for Charity

Passing on undesired offerings might be seen as slightly impolite – except if it's done the right way.

A Charitable Auction

The leader of Italy, Giorgia Meloni, will offload an estimated 270 items bestowed upon her by world leaders during her travels. The diverse haul reportedly features objects like a chainsaw-wielding statuette of Argentina's leader Javier Milei and a pair of exotic blue snake-skin shoes with gold heels.

The presents, collectively, are valued at around €800,000. The plan is to put up for sale in a public auction by a Rome-based fine art auction house. The specific date has not been finalized, although the aim is to conduct the sale by year's end, with the revenue donated to a selection of charitable causes.

Palazzo Chigi Holdings

The items are currently stored in a secure area on the upper level of the government headquarters. It has been reported that Meloni additionally considering auction off gifts given to her preceding prime ministers that have been gathering dust for years.

The full gift list has not yet been disclosed, but a glimpse was gleaned earlier this year when a comprehensive document of items received was presented in parliament. The discussion centered on if a legal value limit was being honored. By law, a prime minister cannot take home presents worth more than €300.

An International Assortment of Gifts

Among the items:

  • A scarf from the Albanian prime minister, reportedly presented to Meloni for her birthday during a meeting abroad.
  • A traditional Kerala dress from India's prime minister.
  • A set of adornments from the president of Slovakia.
  • A porcelain tea set and a selection of wines from the Hungarian prime minister.
  • A pottery dish from the ex-American leader.
  • A tablet from the Ukrainian president.
  • Paintings from Moldova.
  • Various other items including cosmetics, a board, and numerous carpets received during trips to North African and Middle Eastern countries.
"Perhaps the strangest gifts included the statuette from Milei and the exotic footwear," reports suggest.

Political Context

Meloni has been credited, mostly from within her party, with garnering support from global statesmen and making Italy as a key protagonist on the international platform once again.

This unique auction represents a unconventional way to deal with the diplomatic artifacts that are collected during a leader's tenure.
