Chainsaw Man Tops American Cinema Earnings in First Weekend

Can Sony claim to have done it again? In the wake of the triumph of the blockbuster Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle, which earned in excess of $600 million at the box office, the latest Chainsaw Man film has reached beyond the $100M mark internationally, reaching a global total of $108M during its debut. The film beat out Black Phone 2 (almost $13 million) in its sophomore frame in theaters, as well as the music documentary Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere featuring the talented Jeremy Allen White ($9 million).

Notable Domestic and International Earnings

The work of filmmaker Tatsuya Yoshihara, the feature is a direct continuation of the initial season of Chainsaw Man. It earned $18.2M domestically after a robust $5.2M Saturday and $4.5 million Sunday performance. Globally, the MAPPA-produced film earned $14.7 million across 46 global regions, resulting in a global sum of $60.4 million via Sony ($43.1M abroad, $18.2M in the U.S.). The studio has not yet revealed its complete box office tally.

Parallels to Past Blockbuster Anime Movies

Specialist agency an industry expert previously spoke, drawing parallels between the film’s projected performance to Jujutsu Kaisen 0, which earned $34 million in the North America in 2022 and debuted with a nearly identical $18M in the U.S.. This movie's opening frame aligns with that benchmark, while its $108M global gross presently stands just behind that movie's over $166 million final run. While it is improbable the Reze Arc movie will match the earnings seen by mega hit the record-breaking Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle, nonetheless, it is a major victory for Sony.

Marketing Strategies Fuel Performance

Along with its affiliate Crunchyroll have successfully utilized community involvement to boost their dominance at the anime box office. This film's advertising push began at the Anime Expo in LA in July with a MAPPA panel, special events, and Pochita-themed pictures, followed by a major presence at NYCC showcasing behind-the-scenes footage, fan raffles, and additional MAPPA panels. Moreover, organizers held an special preview for fans for moviegoers and popular figures too after the concluding day of the gathering.
