Individuals Discontinuing Slimming Medications Gain Back Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment involves long-term strategies.

Fresh analysis reveals that people who discontinue new GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain reduced body mass much more quickly than those who halt traditional diet and exercise plans.

Published data in a leading health publication points out that while obese individuals often shed substantial amounts of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass comes back at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"Individuals purchasing such treatments must be informed of the risk of fast rebound weight gain when the medication is stopped," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain suggests a reversion to starting mass within about 18 months.

Analyzing Approaches

The analysis, which examined dozens of studies involving thousands of participants, compared the results of these new drugs with older methods.

The team emphasize that individuals who shed pounds through diet and exercise usually have a less rapid creep back—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

The Reason for the Fast Regain

Nutrition scientists suggest the mode of action of the jabs explains the accelerated regain.

GLP-1 drugs mimic a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate appetite.

"Long-term administration of the hormone concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the system to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and could diminish sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.

"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement means appetite is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating a significant risk."

An Ongoing Issue?

Medical guidelines recommend the jabs for individuals with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.

Professionals contend that, considering the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment should be considered ongoing.

This perspective is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "highlight the long-term character of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like diabetes.

Patient Experiences

Individuals who have come off the medication explain a powerful return of appetite.

"It felt as if something activating and you're instantly extremely hungry," recalled one woman.

This challenge is exacerbated if individuals have not established lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.

Growing Use

Survey data indicate that millions of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with desire remaining high.

  • Adoption is more common among females than men.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the highest usage rates.
  • Many obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

In conclusion, clinicians stress that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone fix and long-term success likely depends on combined lifestyle changes.
