Royal Air Force Typhoon jets have joined forces with French aircraft in a coordinated attack against an subterranean weapons facility in Syria used by the IS group, as stated by the British defence ministry.

The facility, pinpointed through surveillance, was assessed as storing arms and explosives, the announcement noted, and was located in mountains just to the north of Palmyra in central Syria.

"The RAF jets employed precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to strike a number of approach shafts leading to the site... initial indications are that the strike was effective," the MoD said.

There was no sign of any harm to civilians in the operation late on Saturday and every plane involved made a safe return, the MoD added.

The British jets were supported by a Voyager tanker plane.

IS - also known as Daesh - enforced militant control over significant areas in Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This action shows British leadership, and commitment to work closely with our partners, to eliminate any re-emergence of the terrorist group and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the region," Britain's Defence Chief the Defence Secretary said.

UK warplanes have carried out surveillance missions over Syria to "prevent any attempted comeback" of Islamic State subsequent to its military defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the ministry said.

"I want to thank every member of our armed forces who took part in this operation for their professionalism and their bravery," Healey said. "Including them were numerous British troops deployed over Christmas and New Year. This mission, to eliminate militants who threaten our safety, shows how UK forces are prepared to act, throughout the year, keeping Britain secure at home and strong abroad."

In December, the United States armed forces carried out what it called a "massive strike" targeting IS targets in the country, after an attack claimed the lives of two American soldiers and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The United Nations estimates Daesh still has between 5,000 and 7,000 combatants in Iraq and Syria.
