Patrick Bamford Signs With the Blades Despite Initiating Derogatory Chants Targeting Manager Wilder
Patrick Bamford has joined Sheffield United only seven months following instigating derogatory chants targeting the team's coach, Chris Wilder.
This experienced striker, without a club since leaving Leeds, has signed a contract with the second-tier club in difficulty until January. His seven-year time at Elland Road was ended by mutual consent this past summer.
Among Bamford’s final notable acts as a Leeds player included starting abusive songs about Chris Wilder during the club’s promotion celebrations in April. Currently, the one-cap England international is set to play under Wilder as the Blades’ manager looks to lift the team he loves out of the bottom places.
Past Conflict Between Bamford & the Manager
The pair had history before Leeds moved up to the Premier League last season while Sheffield United were defeated in the promotion decider by Sunderland. The manager described Bamford as a "muppet" when the roles were reversed during the 2018-19 season and the Blades won automatic promotion whereas Leeds United missed out in the playoffs.
Making Amends and Looking Ahead
All seems has been resolved with Sheffield United, the league's least productive attack, urgently requiring of improvement in attack while Bamford hoping to resurrect his career.
The Wilder chant spread widely in April. A repentant Patrick along with Leeds boss, Farke, called the Sheffield United manager the following day.
Chris Wilder stated at the time: “Had a conversation with Pat recently and I’ve no issue whatsoever with it. I’m not sure regarding the language from a fellow pro! But I valued and admired him calling me.
“We spent 20 minutes and the same again I talked with Daniel Farke too and had a half-hour chat with him and he is a great person, a top guy. Back in my playing days we used to give it and take it and that’s part and parcel of the game across all levels, even on a Sunday morning. I've got absolutely no issue. I'm fine with the situation and I told him that to Patrick.”
Recent Playing Challenges
The forward made 18 games for Leeds in the previous campaign but the former Forest, Chelsea and Middlesbrough striker has struggled with injury over the past few seasons.
