Taliban Utilized Discarded British Gear to Find Local Nationals That Served Alongside Western Forces, Investigation Learns

A confidential source has told a parliamentary probe that British authorities left behind classified devices allowing the militant group to track down Afghans that had served with western forces.

Information Leak Endangers Numerous in Danger

The source, identified as Person A, explained that individuals impacted by the information breach were told to move homes and change their phone numbers to avoid detection from the ruling authorities.

Members of Parliament are investigating the Conservative government's management of a serious leak of personal details involving nearly 19,000 individuals who had asked to relocate to the UK to avoid the Taliban.

How the Leak Happened

A spreadsheet including private information, comprising names, addresses and occasionally family information, was mistakenly released by a worker employed at UK special forces headquarters in early 2022.

The leak was discovered in late 2023, when details of multiple applicants who had sought to move to Britain surfaced on online platforms.

Militant Technology

It appears there is a false assumption that Afghan rulers lack similar capabilities that we have,” the whistleblower testified to MPs.

Technology was deserted in Afghanistan; it's in their hands. Once they acquire mobile details, they are able to track your precise location. This is exactly how specialized teams did.”

During testimony about whether the Taliban had access to sophisticated technology, Person A declared: “They possess all resources.”

Aftermath of the Information Leak

Early investigations submitted to the committee suggested that no fewer than forty-nine relatives and colleagues of Afghans affected by the incident had been murdered.

A legal restriction concerning the incident was implemented in late 2023 and restricted relevant facts concerning it from being made public until mid-2025.

Security Recommendations

Given injunction limitations, the source and the volunteer organization she collaborated with told individuals at risk they were working with that they had “suspicions that mobile communications had been compromised”.

“We recommended that they change residence if they could and altered their contact details. That constituted the two main details that, if the Taliban obtained such data, would lead to them being traced,” the source testified.

Contested Findings

The whistleblower argued that government assessment performed by a retired civil servant had been mistaken to determine that the acquisition of the information by the regime was “not significantly alter current risk levels”.

“The thing to remember is that these individuals are in hiding from the authorities; they remain concealed. Everything boils down to past work history.”

Person A described terrible abuse suffered by concerned people, comprising electric shock torture, waterboarding, and violent assaults.

“We have had young kids who have had bones crushed to force the family to say where someone is,” the whistleblower revealed.
