The Mayor-Elect affirms his intention to reside in the storied Gracie Mansion
New York City's next chief executive, Zohran Mamdani, has confirmed to live in the iconic Gracie Mansion, departing from his rent-controlled apartment that was a central issue in his campaign.
An Iconic Home
Built in 1799, Gracie Mansion has functioned as the primary dwelling for nearly all New York City mayors since the World War II era.
However, Mamdani, for whom housing costs is a core issue, was not quick to announce this decision right away following his triumph in November.
"My choice rested on keeping my family safe and the need to focusing my full attention on enacting the platform on affordability the city's residents supported," stated Mamdani in a statement.
Leaving Astoria
Mamdani lived in the Queens borough of Astoria, a community famous for its abundance of immigrant populations and global cuisine.
"To my neighbors in Astoria: my gratitude for showing us the true spirit of New York City," Mamdani's statement said.
"Although my address will change there, Astoria will continue to reside inside me and my efforts as mayor," he said.
A Contentious Issue
During his race for mayor, Mamdani connected his key pledge – halting rent increases – to his circumstances as a tenant.
Yet his rivals, most notably one-time governor Andrew Cuomo, challenged Mamdani for living in the rent-stabilized unit despite the fact that he hails from a prominent family.
Not All Mayors Stayed
Some mayors have opted to reside at Gracie Mansion.
Michael Bloomberg, the business magnate, kept his residence in his personal mansion on Manhattan's Upper East Side for his three terms, which wrapped up in 2012.
Rather, Bloomberg argued it could serve as a venue for public city functions, and pushed for a major refurbishment of the historic mansion.
A Vastly Different Setting
Upon taking up residence at Gracie Mansion near his inauguration on 1 January, he will be surrounded by an environment far removed from his humble Astoria home.
Featuring butter yellow paint, emerald shutters, and bright white balustrades, Gracie Mansion is a wedding cake of a house overlooking the East River.
Internally, the lower floor of the Federal-style mansion is appointed to reflect the home's original era.
The property, which reportedly has five bedrooms, also boasts enhanced security to safeguard the mayor and his family.
Haunted History
Past occupants have alleged that Gracie Mansion also has supernatural lodgers.
Chirlane McCray, the partner of ex-mayor Bill De Blasio, informed the press that doors occasionally opened and closed by themselves, and the floorboards creaked eerily.
Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams was more certain. "No matter what people claim," he declared in 2022. "There are ghosts in there, man."
A Critical Policy Issue
Mamdani's current apartment is under rent control, a policy where the city imposes caps on how much landlords can raise the rent each year.
Tenants see such units as crucial resources as the price of rent rises faster than what many can afford.
Records showed Mamdani his rent was $2,300 each month for his apartment.
According to the real estate platform Zillow, the median rent for a single-bedroom unit in New York City is $3,500 a month.
