Upon meeting Max in the mental landscape called Camazotz, Holly discovers she is sheltering in a cave that Henry is terrified of. When she lines up her view to the cut-out, she and Max plummet into a deep mine shaft.

The Philadelphia Experiment and Secret Science

*The First Shadow* opens with the infamous Philadelphia Experiment, which allegedly sent a warship into a dimension dubbed the Abyss. The ship was attacked, and the sole survivor was the captain, who emerged in a catatonic condition with an different blood composition.

That survivor's offspring, Martin Brenner, attempted to recreate this experiment in Nevada. But a disloyal lab worker stole research materials to hand over to the Russian agents, who were eager to begin their own interdimensional projects. This spy in the mine shaft is that employee.

The Briefcase's Contents

Considering what is revealed about the doctor's experiments, the briefcase would assuredly have some of Captain Brenner's infected blood. As shown, Henry is already bleeding. He likely becomes contaminated upon contact with the blood, leading to the development of his psychic abilities—powers he would later pass on to the kids in Hawkins Lab.

Alternatively, the case could have held strange particles that was destined to travel to the Hawkins lab, where it maintains the stability of the Upside Down. The prequel shows that young Henry was transported in the Abyss, coming back 12 hours later fundamentally changed. From then on, he fights the whispers of a dark entity, similar to how Will was controlled by the entity in an earlier season.

Confronting Terror

His lasting fear associated with the mine demonstrates how utterly horrifying the incident was for him. Even as he orchestrates the army of monsters and works to collapse the Abyss into Hawkins, a fragment of his psyche lingers. Vecna uses fear, and the narrative points to a final confrontation between Vecna and Will, who has overcome his greatest terrors to gain strength.
