The Substance

The filmmaker's unflinching satire examines the tyranny of female beauty and the feared consequences of ageing. Presence Film

The acclaimed director tests his film-making abilities with this innovative ghostly tale captured wholly from the viewpoint of the spirit. After a clan featuring mother Rebekah and her distressed teen Chloe moves into their fresh home, the lens – representing the ghost – follows them around. The Black Phone

Scott Derrickson's contained scarefest stands strong even without a sequel. Located in 1978 Denver, a series of kidnappings has rendered the local kids frightened. When Finney is kidnapped by the kidnapper and locked up in a dungeon, he fears the worst. However, the disconnected phone mounted nearby keeps ringing, with ghostly voices giving advice, as the intuitive nightmares of Gwen, his sister may be his salvation. A solid creepfest. This Dramatic Portrait

In the battle between spirituality and money, the winner is obvious for Mammon in Showalter's delightfully tacky film adaptation of the disgraced TV preacher plus her lawbreaking partner. Andrew Garfield portrays the corrupt Bakker, who proclaims initially, claiming divine approval for wealth. Both individuals commence profiting from the American public's religious faith. It's a spectacle of poor styling, overdone appearance and hypocrisy, yet Chastain achieves to present the character as a sympathetic figure. October 14th, 1.15am, on Film4
