What We Know Regarding the Fatalities of the Bondi Terrorist Incident
No fewer than 16 individuals lost their lives and more than 40 were wounded when assailants shot at a Hanukah celebration at Bondi Beach, an incident local authorities have called a act of terrorism.
As of the newest reports, authorities have confirmed the death toll remains at 16, encompassing one of the suspected attackers. Furthermore, 42 wounded individuals were transported to the hospital.
Those who died have not yet been officially identified, but investigators think their ages are between 10 and 87 years old.
Here are the victims who have been identified at this time.
Eli Schlanger
Originally from London clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first victim to be named.
Known as a father of five children, he was the assistant rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Family members and friends spoke of him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very kind and sociable person who was dedicated to assisting others”.
“How can a happy rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a relative asked.
Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the arrival of their youngest child in October.
Alexander Kleytman
Alexander Kleytman was also confirmed among the deceased, according to his wife.
She recounted the events leading up to the attack, saying they were standing when the gunfire began. “He moved to protect me because he wanted to stay near me,” she stated.
The pair were both survivors of the Holocaust, having experienced unspeakable terror in their youth. They had subsequently immigrated to Australia from Eastern Europe.
Dan Elkayam
The French authorities have announced that French man Dan Elkayam is a casualty.
In a statement, a senior official declared that France shared the grief of his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.
“This low act is a new, tragic manifestation of a revolting outpouring of hatred against Jews that we must combat,” the message continued.
One Child
A child who was taken to the a children's hospital is among those who had died, police have confirmed.
One Israeli Citizen
A national of Israel was a fatality in the incident, according to reports citing the Israeli government.
Those Injured
Of the 42 people transported to hospitals, many are still receiving treatment, with several in serious condition. The injured comprise two officers who attended the scene.
A wounded man is a bystander who attempted to intervene to confront one of the gunmen. Called a hero, he sustained bullet wounds but is expected to recover in hospital.
Arsen Ostrovsky
Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a public affairs professional. It has been reported he was hurt and underwent treatment in hospital.
Communicating, he recounted the incident as an “utter carnage,” but also praised the actions of those who rushed to help. He stated he felt it was a “stroke of luck” he survived.
Evan Zlatkis
Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was another casualty in the attack. He described he heard “dozens and dozens” of gunshots.
“Initially, I believed it was rubber bullets, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he explained. “I sustained a gunshot wound. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
