Zverev Battles Auger-Aliassime in ATP Finals Match

Overview

The occupational hazards of group stage tennis often result in during this phase of the ATP Finals we’re often left puzzled, hastily looking for a calculator and attempting to calculate the mind-boggling qualification scenarios. However today's game between Alexander Zverev and Felix Auger-Aliassime, mercifully, is simple. It’s a straight shootout: the successful player sets up a semifinal contest against Carlos Alcaraz at this season-ending event; the defeated player goes home.

The German is the frontrunner for this: the world No 3 is the player with greater achievements, has previously won at this tournament on two prior occasions and holds the advantage in their personal record 6-3, securing victories in both their previous matches on an covered hard surface.

But … this is the surface on which Auger-Aliassime has claimed most of his championships, he is full of confidence after his remarkable turnaround against Shelton on Wednesday and he took out Zverev in the US Open third round in August. Plus, conditions are faster in the host city than at the US Open venue, which provides an additional advantage in AA’s benefit.

Should Zverev be cautious, like he was against Sinner, and Auger-Aliassime takes it to the European player with his stinging serves and bold strategy, it could well be the 25-year-old Canadian – the former prodigy who was once in line before the Spanish and Italian stars to succeed the legendary trio – who earns the dubious honour of facing the top-ranked player the next day.

The match starts: at around 20:30 in the host city, 7.30pm GMT.
